This book aims to introduce at a very accessible level the basic notions that underlie popular approaches used among practitioners in applied linguistics.  It is up to the readers to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and to decide which path to follow for their own particular research projects.  To assist them in learning more about these various approaches, readers are introduced to terminology relevant to each.
